エジンバラ・スカルプチャー・ワークショップ ESW（スコットランド）は、1965年、エジンバラ・カレッジ・オブ・アート彫刻科の卒業生たちによって、創作環境を整えることと芸術分野に多くの人びとを引きつけることを目的に創設されました。スコットランドの歴史と文化が交差するエジンバラで、国際的な新進アーティストを紹介する意欲的な企画展や教育プログラム、特に彫刻を表現とする国内外のアーティストを受け入れるレジデンスプログラムを行っています。 レジデンスプログラムを通じて滞在するアーティストは、充実した設備とスタジオを使用しながらESWを訪れるあらゆる人びとと交流する機会を交え、創作に励むことができます。
また「2019-2020 スコットランドー日本 交換レジデンスプログラム」（スコットランドを代表する３つのレジデンス機関：Cove Park、ESW、Hospitalfieldが日本のレジデンス機関と交換プログラムを行う）における協働団体の一つとして、ESWはアーティストの創作活動を支援しています。 ここでは、茨城県守谷市でレジデンスプログラムを運営するアーカスプロジェクトが2019年2月に招聘したESWプログラム・コーディネーター／インディペンデント・キュレーターのレズリー・ヤングにインタビューをしました。ヤングは、2017年にグラスゴーで立ち上げられたキュレーターの共同体Chapter Thirteenの創立メンバーとしても活動しています。

2018年秋、初めてESWを訪れました。印象的だったのは、何部屋にも分かれた広いスタジオ設備と、実際に制作をしていたアーティストの生き生きとした姿です。ほかにも中庭（当時はアートプロジェクトの発表の場にもなっていた）や展示スペース、中庭に面した大きな窓が光を取り込むカフェが併設されて、アーティストはリサーチや制作に集中し、誰もが静かな時間を過ごせる環境でした。（東海林）
近年、エジンバラだけ見ても「写真」、「版画」、「タペストリー」など、表現分野に特化した施設が増えています。これにより、以前にも増してスケールが大きく専門的な技術や機材を使った制作が可能になり、スコットランドがアーティストたちによって魅力的な街に変化している様子がうかがえます。また、レズリーのようにインディペンデント・キュレーターによるコレクティブが生まれたり、使われなくなった工場や倉庫を改装して新たなアート・スペースにするなどの動きも活発で、 個人的にはそうした、DIY・草の根的な活動や表現がスコットランドのアートの魅力の一つだと感じています。（堀内）

vol.1 Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (Scotland)
Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW), set up in 1986 by a group of graduates from Edinburgh College of Art, is to further nourish sustainable creative production and to engage public participation in the field of arts. Located in culturally vibrant city of Edinburgh, ESW has been open to the public for inspiring exhibitions, educational programs, and residency programs for national and international artists to support artistic production particularly in sculpture. ESW provides professional working environment with enhanched machinery and tools to the resident artists, and widely promote opportunities where contempoary practitioners and audience meet. Through 2019-2020 Scotland-Japan Residency Exchange Program, ESW plays its important role to cultivate a creative field for both Scottish and Japanese artists.
For the first episode, Lesley Young, a new programme cordinator at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop shared us a brief history of ESW, and how they oversee the programs today. The interview was recorded during her time in Japan when she was invited to join in a residency program initiated by ARCUS Project in Moriya, Ibaraki, in early 2019. Young is also a member of the curator co-operative Chapter Thirteen formed in Glasgow.
